Two of the younger members of my family are trying to decide what to do with their lives this week, and they’re only 23 and 24, so I think they’ve got plenty of time, but it feels like a big decision to them.
It feels like they have to make a decision now to decide what to do with the rest of their lives.
I’ve been trying to explain that you can’t ever know how your life’s going to turn out and that two of the things that make people most happy in their career is doing something meaningful to them, and having a measure of control over how you spend your minutes day-by-day.
So I’ve tried to encourage them to look for something that they could care about, and also look for something that gives them a little bit of autonomy about how they spend their minute-by-minute time in their working environment.
I reminded them of Steve Jobs’ quote that you can only see the path looking back.
Life, and work, and your career, and your success, is but a series of stepping stones, and you have to take that first step onto the first stepping stone to know which way you’re going to go next, because the stepping stones only appear as you step onto the next one.
It’s scary, but it’s true, and if you can just trust that, then you’ll be fine.
