Yes. Well, welcome to the VZINE this week and I’ve got something very special to share with you this if you’re even remotely a little bit techy. But before we get started let’s just tell you it’s been a really good week in Greece and I know that you guys are having a heatwave in England at the moment, while we’ve just got a load of snow coming from Athens. So, that’s something to look forward to.
But I seem to have caught the sun none-the-less. I’m a little bit rosy today because I’ve been sitting in the sun all week. I try and get out every day. Go and sit down my favourite cafe, look at the sea, and have a hot chocolate, and I love that very much. So, yeah let’s get on with the show shall we? I’ll tell you all I’ve got to tell you.
So, one of the most powerful things you can do when you’ve got a website is to split test the key pages and the idea is that if you’re not getting very much traffic you would just want to split test one particular thing, so, say the headline or the colour of the call to action button or something like that but you only need one thing at a time.
Now, it used to be quite tricky to do this, you used to have to set up two different versions of your page and then split the traffic between them and you’d generally have to pay for some kind of software tool but the good news is that Google Analytics have now.
I think they’ve bought Optimise, which is something I used to use a lot, because it’s all free now and so if you are able to put a bit of Google Analytics code on your website, which most people can manage how to do, then you can also add a bit of Google Optimise code to your website too and it goes in the header tag, if you know what that is, or just in your general scripts box if you’ve got a theme that’s got a place where you’ve got a place where you can add scripts and it goes in exactly the same place as your Facebook, Pixel, and all the bits of code like that.
So, you can send it to your developer, if you’ve got a developer, but the trick is just to get the Analytics code and the Optimise code onto every page of your website. Then you go and log into your Google Optimise account and you link it up to your Analytics account, which is all quite self explanatory, I managed to puzzle it out very quickly and then you can click on any page on your website and you can click on the little Chrome extension, which is Google Optimise in Chrome extension, and you can just choose an element of your page to change. It’s absolutely magic!
And, so I would start with a headline or start with a page with a picture or without a picture or you can split test two different pictures or you can split test the call to action button colour. All different kinds of things.
So, you’re looking to do A B split testing and just test one element on each important page. It is so exciting, I can’t tell you, because the only thing is that you are going to end up with a page that performs, and the variant that you don’t like the most will be the one that performs the best.
So, how do you measure success or say for example you’ve got two headlines on one page, how do you measure success?
You would set the page URL of the outcome page. Say, for example, you wanted to test two different headlines and see which one led to more opt-ins to your mailing list, you would actually just get the URL of a thank you page that they end up on after they’ve opted-in, and drop that into Google Optimizer and it will tell you which version of your page performs best over time.
Now, most people don’t get much traffic, so like I say, just split test one thing and come back two weeks later and set an email alert when you’re setting it up and they’ll email you and tell you which page performs best I mean how fabulous is that? Free, completely free.
So, why don’t you go through and decide which are the key pages on your website and which pages you might like to do one split test on and then go and set it up in Google Optimizer completely free of charge.
Oh, and by the way, if you don’t know what any of that means then do come along and join Clicks and Leads Academy because I am very good, although it might not have sounded like it in the last couple of minutes, at making a very complex concept quite simple and easy to follow and I’ve got little videos in my website membership area that show you exactly how to do these things I’m talking about.
Come along to the website nicolacairncross.com and just look at the products and services tab on the top menu and the first thing you’ll see will be Clicks and Leads Academy. I’m really looking forward to helping you do this stuff.
On the podcast ownitthepodcast.com, we’ve got an episode all about the things Judith and I love, it was for Valentines day, we recorded on Valentines day, and as neither of us have got partners we decided to just talk about all the people and things we love. So, just come along to ownitthepodcast.com/215, or as always there’s a link to it from the blog nicolacairncross.com/blog.
And on the blog this week, I’ve been talking about how to do immersive learning, or deep dive learning. How you can accelerate your learning by learning in a group. How you should try to not need any validation from other people about if what you’re doing is a good thing or not. Try and be self validated, where you think, do you think this is a good thing or not? Oh yeah I do! Okay well let’s do it then.
Yeah, so, there’s new stuff going onto the blog every single day, so do come along and I’d love to hear from you, so if you’ve got a topic that you’d like me to cover, either in one of the one minute videos or in a blog post, or on the VZINE, then do let me know just by commenting anywhere you see this video today, comment underneath and I would love to help you with the things that you’re wrangling with particularly. That’s it from me. See you later.
