Over the last few months over 600 people have filled in a short digital marketing survey revealing their biggest challenges with either getting started with internet marketing or with marketing their businesses online. Respondents who completed just 2 x digital marketing survey questions, are now enjoying their free copy of my book “How To Market ANY Business Online”
In this series of blog posts, I’ll be answering the survey questions “What’s your biggest challenge with marketing online?” and “If I could wave a realistic magic wand, what do you think the solution to that challenge might be?”. As you’ll see, some answers were terse to the point of vanishing! Others, however, gave me more to work with!
In my survey, one of the first respondents said their biggest digital marketing challenge was:
Keeping up with all the new social media platforms
and you thought the possible solution to that is
Having someone else do it!
My Immediate Advice For You
I don’t think you need to keep up with all the new platforms, after all, businesses have become successful before the internet existed, and even since it came into being around 1995, we’ve all made money without knowing about platforms like Snapchat, which didn’t exist last year even!
If you are doing your social media yourself, concentrate on what you enjoy BUT also think about where your ideal customer is. Then be most active on the platform where the two cross over and then automate / leverage the rest.
Nobody can create relevant social media content like you would. so you should concentrate on that in the early days but use tools and outsourcers to help you spread your message as far as possible.
For example, my ideal customers are age 45+ solopreneurs or business owners; they are probably on Facebook if only to see pics of their kids or grand-kids. They read blogs and they might also be on Twitter and LinkedIn but because I don’t enjoy using either of those regularly, I have automated things there.
I create content on my blog, podcast, then use Facebook Live and my own camera to record snippets with. I try and remember that the content I produce on Facebook is just about helping people and reminded them of the following:
- I exist
- I make my money online
- I walk my talk
- I’m a middle aged digital nomad
- I can probably help them do the same
- that I’m fun to work with!Hence the slightly bonkers photos and videos from Greece.
