So one of the things I’ve had to learn over the years is how to tone down the emotion I bring to the business. I’m a very emotional person. I try not to be. I try and be as business-like as possible.
I regularly have to go back and look at my emails and strip out all the emotional stuff in it, especially when I feel attacked. That’s the thing. When someone tells me I haven’t done a good job and I feel it’s unfair, I get very defensive and I get very emotional.
So, I have to go and remove those parts of the email and leave it down to the cold hard facts and if you find that you’re doing that too then it’s worth finding someone to talk to.
This is where a mentor could be really, really handy ’cause your mentor can point out the other side of the argument. They can play devil’s advocate in any discussion and they can tell you when you’re being overly emotional and not business-like. So, do find someone you trust to fill that role.
