My Business Diary | Techie Roadblocks & Long Distant Strangers
Lots of techie ups and downs this week – it’s been a bit of a frustrating week all round; my studio desk microphone – that’s the offending item – has starting doing strange stuff (think it’s a Windows update / driver issue) and I can’t find my other backup mic. My lapel or lavelier mic’s are great for public speaking but are too sensitive for close work. This has affected this week’s podcast quality but I’m ploughing on as being consistent is more important to me right now than perfectionism. Or as Rich Schefren would say, the trade off is better than the pay-off.
I’ve been getting right back into Rich’s materials again, and really enjoying them. He’s set up a Facebook page and is recording a daily video on his way to the office. Bit worried about the safety element but they are thought provoking and you can check them out here on Rich’s Facebook Page
I’m also having issues with the rendering of the edited podcast once put together. Sometimes it works when I upload it to Amazon and put it into Podpress, sometimes it doesn’t and I have to re-render it. My Sony Sounforge software is doing something strange and I need to re-install it but I think it’s in a box in my ex-husband’s garage (which as anyone who knows about my S-phobia will know that means it might as well be in Outer Mongolia.
Steve gave up his Saturday afternoon to help me troubleshoot – he’s such a star! I think, with his help on settings, I am now back to using the studio mic and he’s given me some rendering tips that may make it all work better. It’s got to be a good quality sound for podcasting as most people listen using headphones.
I’ve also heard from the transcriptionists that 2-3 modules are not “good enough” quality to transcribe, although when I listen to them I could transcribe them fine if I could type fast enough. Need to find another one or some transcription software perhaps? This is going to hold up my book which is annoying. However, I will be getting on with the Report and Webinar this week, and also making a start on the Membership Area using OptimizePress and WPWishlist.
Reading Andy’s “Bug Free Mind” books – advance copies – and also Morty Lefkoe’s book about his Decision Making Process (I’ll be reviewing that on next week’s podcast) and my journaling in my Moleskine diary is keeping me sane though all these roadblocks and I really enjoyed going to London on Friday for the first meeting of my Mastermind Group with Minesh Bhindi, Andy Shaw, Mark Donnan and Jason Strachan the copywriter. We are the core five, but we are on the lookout for 2-3 more, but we have decided that at least two of us have to know (and rate very highly) the potential candidates so we are going to let it be an organic process. We also want complementary skills as the Star / Creator profiles are already top heavy LOL. Getting a word in was a challenge sometimes and as for an agenda – well, herding cats is the phrase that sprang to mind!
Another highlight was talking to the Brighton Jazz School on Tuesday at the invitation of Wayne McConnell – musicians are notoriously reticent about promoting themselves, then they get really stroppy when someone of inferior musical ability succeeds, it’s really quite funny. If you have an amzing talent you should be shouting from the rooftops because who are you serving by hiding your gift?
Family life also continues apace with my daughter having two more college interviews over the next two weeks (she’s already been offered at place at my first choice college) and our brother Alex arrives from Australia on Tuesday. The last time I saw him was three years ago when he stayed with Heather for 6 months or so and we all went to Florence & Pisa for a long weekend to see Heather sing in Pisa Cathedral.
Have fun this week and keep on truckin’
