7 Key Secrets Of Success | Part 1 | Introduction
In the early days, I was always very focused on the practical, the down to earth, the “how-to” of becoming successful. I’d read all the books out there on the market on the principles of success, wealth creation, becoming rich, the power of belief and focus, attraction principles and I was angry and frustrated!
Because none of them told you how to make money! None of them laid out a step by step plan of HOW TO ACTUALLY DO IT!
So my first book The Money Gym – which started as an email programme, I was not arrogant enough to think I had a book in me – was written out of that frustration; I wanted to give you a step by step, logical plan for how to make money and even become rich.
I wrote it as I wanted it, simple, easy to understand, with pictures. I tried to include (and credit) the best bits of all I had read or heard, from Robert Kiyosaki to Napoleon Hill, from Steven Covey to Mary Hunt, from Gill Fielding to Robert G. Allen, especially where it was helping me and making a positive difference to the way I thought and particularly to the way I acted.
Starting to plan out and write the step by step email programme that eventually became The Money Gym book led directly – and it now feels inevitably – to the creation of The Money Gym itself – looking back it seems that it was inevitable the Money Gym happened, but there were so many factors that came into play, so many little actions I had taken, people I had met, things that had happened that had shaped the person I became.
As an aside, I remember (with not a little awe looking back) the day I sat at the side table, in the living room of The Acacia, the hotel I bought “no money down”, and gazed out of the window and thought…hang on! why don’t I combine the hotel with the wealth coaching and make it a one year programme where they all come here for workshops and get coached on the phone in the daytime between breakfast and letting the evening arrivals in…..?
I also remember writing that first ever sales letter for The Money Gym – it just seemed to pour out of me, in the way that the most enjoyable kind of writing does (like this article is, actually) in a effortless flow from your brain to your fingers (but how does it get in your brain in the first place I wonder now?)
O yes, even then in 2003 or so, I believed in writing the sales letter first, before you create the product, to see if there is a demand…I vividly remember writing that email sales letter (not even a web page) while the kids were at school and sending it out to the tiny email list I had built up over the previous 4 years or so…..and not knowing AT ALL what was going to happen.
Would anyone reply? Would anyone buy? Time to go get the kids from school now so it’s in the lap of the gods.
I got back to find that this was the sales letter which brought in the first 27 clients, the first five of whom to respond “won” the one year programme for free. My nod to the “abundance principles” – give five way and some might sign up and pay!
22 to be precise. All committing to a one year programme, paying £279.50 a month so instantly giving me a guaranteed turnover of £6149 a month less costs.
One of the people who responded first, so won a free place, was Annie Kaszina, now a Money Gym coach, and financially free. Expert in property investing, internet marketing, with a book or two of her own and a hefty stock portfolio to her name, an NLP master and Alexander Technique teacher with a thriving business. Annie went on to pay for a second year, became very close to us all and an obvious choice when we were looking for coaches for the Money Gym.
Next out of the blocks, I think, was Judith Morgan, who became my business partner eventually. If it wasn’t that year, it was the very next year Judith joined and both Steve and I remember the day she walked down the hallway of The Acacia, resplendent as ever, in pink.
And amazingly enough, I had coached Marian (Ryan, Money Gym coach) in the year before the Money Gym was conceived, and Philly came along as companion – now wife – to Money Gym client Paul Fuggle in the year after Judith.
So what happened to the other four who won a free place?
I have no idea and do you know, I can’t even remember their names without looking it up. They just faded away because after all, I can’t MAKE people ring me and turn up to workshops!
What DID they throw away? And WHY & HOW did that happen?
So now we come to the nub of this article. Twelve years later, I’m no longer obsessed with the “HOW” of wealthy creation – there are now loads of workshops and seminars to teach you:
- HOW to invest in property
- HOW to invest in the stockmarket
- HOW to build a business
- HOW to make money online
I’m speaking at two of these events this weekend alone – over 600 people.
As a very rough estimation, up and down the country, there are about 50,000 people sitting in seminars on one or other of those topics.
They spend one, or more often, two days in a hotel conference room somewhere, on their own or with a companion, learning stuff they will never put into practice.
O yes…….I’m afraid so.
At a guess, only 5% of the people sitting in those windowless, airless rooms, gazing at a person on a stage, wishing for a magic wand, will ever walk out of those rooms and take any action.
And a tiny percentage of those, having taken action, will get any results.
While a tiny percentage of those, having got some results, will carry on and push through to massive success.
I’ve watched Money Gym clients come, absorb everything we have to give them, and while some stay and some go, some take action and some no…..
As a business owner, as a coach, and as a speaker myself, this is the topic I’ve slowly become obsessed with over the last few years.
I’m obsessed nowadays, not with the practicalities of success, but the beliefs, behaviours and attitudes of succesful people.
But how can I find out what makes successful people successful? This surely is the biggest secret (apart from The Secret!) of all.
The secret behind The Secret, in fact.
Surely I should know? I am one of those people who take action and I’ve achieved some amazing things (looking back and with the help of others of course). I’m not there yet, but I’m getting there.
And I’m surrounded by people on the same road too, increasingly I’m surrounded by action takers, success stories, folks who are definately making it.
But I hate leaving anyone behind. I hate it!
So as a step towards finding out what makes SOME people take action, SOME people keep going in the face of few results or none at all, what keeps SOME people pushing and pushing till they make it – whatever that means for them….
In a bid to help those people who struggle to take action, the 95% of the audiences I speak to, the Money Gym clients who have faded away over the years, I’m on a mission now to find what I’m calling the Alchemy of Success.
I’m now telephone or video interviewing every successful person I come across and I’m going to grill them like “a shrimp on the barbie” as my recent interview victim, Brett McFall described it in an email to his students.
I started with the “Rebel Aussie Business Woman” and ace poker player, Jennie Armato, moved onto fellow brit, Martin Avis and this week, Brett, and I’ve just secured an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk, all personal heros of mine.
And every week, I’m going to share more thoughts about this topic – do feel free to share your questions, thoughts, frustrations, breakthroughs, challenges, inspirational stories with me on this blog.
Just hit the “Share Your Thoughts” link above and go for it.
To YOUR Success!
